Fire-Salvaged Old Man Banksia (Banksia serrata)
Duality of Being is a compelling abstract sculpture that explores the coexistence of trauma and renewal, light and shadow. Carved from fire-salvaged Old Man Banksia, the artwork presents two contrasting faces: one side remains in its pure, unharmed state, showcasing pale blonde timber dotted with distinctive natural flecks and fine spots, while the opposing side bears the deep, scorched mark of a South Coast bushfire.
Rather than concealing the fire’s destruction, the burnt face has been meticulously sanded and blended back into the form—creating a seamless gradient where rich charcoal hues dissolve into warm, smooth wood grain.
Elevated on a custom gallery base, Duality of Being stands as a profound testament to resilience, capturing how past trials and natural purity coexist within a single, unified form.
